Ceramic Arts Studio Betty Harrington Design Chinese Boy & Girl 5" Shelf Sitter Bamboo Planters 1947-1956

ITEM DESCRIPTION

This Ceramic Arts Studio Betty Harrington Design Chinese Boy & Girl Shelf Sitter Bamboo Planter Pair is in Excellent Vintage Condition with No Chips No Cracks No Crazing. Designed by Betty Harrington for Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin, these charming companion pieces date from 1947–1956 and measure approximately 5".

The pair features a Chinese boy and girl seated casually on the edges of matching bamboo-form planters. Each figure is modeled with one leg extending down the front of the planter, creating the distinctive shelf-sitter appearance.

Both figures wear soft ivory-colored traditional-style clothing decorated with blue trim and delicate hand-painted floral accents in red, green and black. Their black hair, shoes and finely painted facial features provide attractive contrast against the light-colored clothing.

The planters are formed to resemble bundles of bamboo stalks and finished in a warm golden tan glaze with darker shading that emphasizes the individual bamboo sections and joints. The open interiors allow the pieces to function as small decorative planters while the seated figures make them equally attractive as display figurines.

The undersides retain the original Ceramic Arts Studio Madison, Wisconsin factory markings.

This Ceramic Arts Studio pair is from a lifetime collection of well over a thousand pieces, including figurines, salt & pepper shakers and head vases. We were very fortunate to purchase over 500 pieces from this remarkable collection and make them available to our buyers.

DESIGNER HISTORY

Betty Harrington was the principal designer for Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin, one of America's best-known producers of decorative ceramic figurines during the 1940s and 1950s. Her designs are recognized for their stylized forms, expressive personalities and distinctive hand-decorated finishes. Today, Ceramic Arts Studio pieces are collected for their imaginative Mid-Century designs and connection to the history of American studio ceramics.

PATTERN & DESIGN

This unusual companion pair combines Betty Harrington's figural modeling with functional bamboo-form planters. The boy and girl are positioned as shelf sitters, each perched on the rim of a planter with one leg extending down the front.

The warm golden bamboo forms provide a striking background for the ivory clothing and colorful hand-painted decoration. Blue edging follows the contours of the garments, while small floral motifs add red, green and black accents.

Although each figure has an individual pose, the matching bamboo planters, coordinated clothing and complementary positioning clearly establish the two as a companion pair. Their combination of shelf-sitter figurines and decorative planters makes them an especially distinctive Ceramic Arts Studio design.
