Japanese Mino Ware Pottery Tochiri Kanna Chatter Design 9 3/8" Bowl 1970–1990s

This bowl is in Excellent Vintage Condition with No Chips, No Cracks, and No Repairs. The glaze is clean and well preserved, and the piece displays beautifully.

ITEM DESCRIPTION

This vintage Japanese Mino ware pottery bowl features a traditional Tochiri (drip glaze) finish combined with a kanna chatter design, created by carving rhythmic tool marks into the clay before glazing.

The interior displays a soft celadon green glaze with a contrasting iron-toned radial burst center, while the carved chatter marks create a repeating textured pattern that adds depth and movement to the design. The glaze naturally pools and breaks over the carved surface, producing variation in tone typical of high-quality studio and regional Japanese pottery.

The bowl is hand-thrown with a well-defined foot ring and retains the character and craftsmanship associated with Mino pottery traditions.

This bowl is in Excellent Vintage Condition with No Chips, No Cracks, and No Repairs. NOTE: There is light shelf wear on the base consistent with age. The glaze is clean with no discoloration.

PATTERN & DESIGN

This design reflects traditional Mino ware aesthetics, combining functional form with expressive surface treatment. The kanna chatter marks create a structured repeating texture, while the Tochiri glaze introduces natural variation as it flows across the surface during firing. The contrast between the soft celadon tones and the darker iron center enhances the visual depth, making each example unique.

This measures 2 1/2" High x 9 3/8" Wide rim to rim. I have provided a lot of pictures to best describe the condition of this Bowl.
