This Ceramic Arts Studio Betty Harrington Mother & Baby Bear Salt & Pepper Shaker Set is in Excellent Vintage Condition with No Chips No Cracks No Crazing. Designed by Betty Harrington for Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin, this charming set measures approximately 4 3/8" tall.

This Ceramic Arts Studio piece comes from an exceptional lifetime collection of well over 1,000 pieces, including figurines, salt & pepper shakers, head vases, and other Ceramic Arts Studio designs. Carefully assembled over many years, the collection represents an extraordinary gathering of Ceramic Arts Studio pieces. We were very fortunate to acquire more than 500 pieces from this collection and are pleased to make them available to our buyers.

This delightful design depicts a large mother bear sitting upright while holding her baby closely against her body. The two individual shakers fit together to create a single whimsical composition, with the smaller baby bear nestled securely against its mother.

Both bears are finished in a glossy creamy white glaze with wonderful hand-painted details. Black accents highlight the eyes, noses, paws and claws, while soft peach coloring on the mouths adds warmth and expression to their faces.

The mother's raised head and cheerful expression, combined with the baby looking affectionately upward, give this set the wonderful personality associated with Betty Harrington's Ceramic Arts Studio animal designs.

DESIGNER HISTORY

Betty Harrington was the principal designer for Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin, during its celebrated 1940s and 1950s period. Beginning her association with the studio in 1942, Harrington created hundreds of imaginative figurines and decorative pieces known for their distinctive personalities, expressive faces and whimsical Mid-Century styling. Her designs remain highly collectible today and are an important part of American ceramic history.

PATTERN & DESIGN

Mother & Baby Bear is a wonderful example of Betty Harrington's whimsical novelty salt & pepper shaker designs for Ceramic Arts Studio. Rather than simply standing side by side, the two separate pieces interact and fit together to form a single sculptural composition.

The larger mother bear embraces the smaller baby, while the baby's upward-looking face creates a charming interaction between the two figures. Their exaggerated expressions, sculpted fur and contrasting black hand-painted details give the pair tremendous personality.
