ITEM DESCRIPTION

This vintage Edward Radford Pottery Butterfly Ware Tree Trunk Pitcher is in Excellent Vintage Condition with No Chips No Cracks. NOTE: There is Natural Crazing consistent with the age of the piece. Made in England and dating to approximately the 1930s, this unusual Art Deco pottery pitcher measures approximately 8 3/4" tall.

The pitcher is modeled in the form of a rustic tree trunk, with a wonderful textured brown and tan glaze creating the appearance of natural bark. A branch-like handle extends from the side and blends beautifully into the sculptural design.

The front is decorated with colorful raised flowers and foliage in shades of yellow and green. Near the top is a striking applied butterfly with pastel green, pink, blue, and yellow wings surrounding a glossy black body.

The combination of the textured tree-bark background, dimensional flowers, brightly colored leaves, and large applied butterfly gives this pitcher tremendous character and makes it especially decorative when viewed from the front.

The underside bears the Edward Radford England BUTTERFLY WARE backstamp.

PATTERN & DESIGN

Edward Radford's Butterfly Ware is distinguished by its colorful nature-inspired decoration and highly sculptural forms. This unusual pitcher combines several of those elements in a particularly appealing design.

The body is modeled and glazed to resemble the textured bark of a tree trunk, while the handle has the appearance of a natural branch growing from the side. Raised green leaves and yellow flowers climb the front of the pitcher, creating a dimensional woodland scene.

The focal point is the large applied butterfly positioned near the top. Its glossy black body and colorful pastel wings stand out dramatically against the earthy brown tree-trunk background.

The combination of the sculptural tree-trunk form, dimensional floral decoration, colorful butterfly, Art Deco period styling, substantial 8 3/4" size, and clearly marked Edward Radford Butterfly Ware base makes this a particularly attractive example of vintage English art pottery.
