Description
Japanese Tenmoku Artist Signed Shinbi Studio Mashiko Mingei 4 7/8" Matcha Chawan Tea Bowl 1965-1985
This is in Excellent Condition with No Chips No Cracks No Crazing. This listing is for an authentic Japanese studio pottery chawan (tea bowl), hand-thrown and artist-signed with the impressed Shinbi (信美) kiln mark. This bowl was produced in the Mashiko region of Japan during the golden era of the post-war Mingei folk pottery movement, working in the revered Hamada–Leach tradition.
The bowl features a deep Tenmoku / oil-spot iron glaze with dramatic tonal variation, micro-crackling, and natural ash flashing—hallmarks of true Japanese reduction-fired stoneware. The thick, properly formed foot ring, heavy clay body, and balanced ceremonial proportions confirm this as a genuine functional tea ceremony chawan rather than decorative export pottery.
This is a serious piece of Japanese studio ware, made for traditional matcha service and collected internationally for its authenticity, glaze development, and historical lineage.
