ITEM DESCRIPTION

This Ceramic Arts Studio Betty Harrington Design Kangaroo & Joey Salt & Pepper Shaker Set is in Excellent Vintage Condition with No Chips No Cracks No Crazing NOTE: these do not come with stoppers. Designed by Betty Harrington for Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin, this charming set dates to 1951 and measures approximately 4 1/2" tall.

Kangaroo & Joey are part of Ceramic Arts Studio's whimsical Snuggle line of salt & pepper shakers. These clever designs feature two coordinating shakers that fit or nest together to create a single sculptural composition.

The set depicts a wonderfully expressive mother kangaroo seated upright with her little joey nestled securely in her pouch. The mother is modeled with long ears, an elongated face, large feet, and a sweeping tail that curves around the smaller figure.

The joey is a separate shaker that fits neatly into the mother's pouch, creating the delightful mother-and-baby composition. Both pieces are decorated in soft cream and warm brown tones, with darker brown accents emphasizing the facial features, ears, paws, and other sculptural details.

This Ceramic Arts Studio piece comes from an exceptional lifetime collection of well over 1,000 pieces, including figurines, salt & pepper shakers, head vases, and other Ceramic Arts Studio designs. Carefully assembled over many years, the collection represents an extraordinary gathering of Ceramic Arts Studio pieces. We were very fortunate to acquire more than 500 pieces from this collection and make them available to our buyers.

DESIGNER HISTORY

Betty Harrington was the principal designer associated with Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin. Her imaginative figurines and novelty designs, characterized by expressive personalities, whimsical subjects, elaborate costumes, and distinctive hand decoration, helped establish Ceramic Arts Studio as one of the most recognizable American ceramic manufacturers of the mid-20th century.

PATTERN & DESIGN

Kangaroo & Joey are part of Ceramic Arts Studio's clever Snuggle line of salt & pepper shakers, in which the two individual pieces were designed to interact and fit together as a single composition.

The smaller joey nests directly into the mother kangaroo's pouch, transforming two functional shakers into an especially charming mother-and-baby sculpture when displayed together.

The exaggerated ears, expressive faces, oversized feet, curved tail, and contrasting cream and brown decoration give the pair the playful personality characteristic of Betty Harrington's Ceramic Arts Studio animal designs.

Produced in 1951, Kangaroo & Joey is a wonderful example of the imaginative combination of function, humor, and sculptural design found in Ceramic Arts Studio's Snuggle salt & pepper shaker line.

These measure approximately 4 1/2" High x 2 1/2" Wide base. I have provided many pictures to best describe the condition of this Shaker Set.
