ITEM DESCRIPTION

This Ceramic Arts Studio Tony The Barber Razor Blade Bank is in Excellent Vintage Condition with No Chips or Cracks. NOTE: There is light natural crazing consistent with the piece's age. Made in Madison, Wisconsin, this distinctive figural piece was designed by noted Ceramic Arts Studio designer Betty Harrington and dates from 1951 to 1956.

This Ceramic Arts Studio piece comes from an exceptional lifetime collection of well over 1,000 pieces, including figurines, salt-and-pepper shakers, head vases, and other Ceramic Arts Studio designs. Carefully assembled over many years, the collection represents an extraordinary gathering of Ceramic Arts Studio pieces. We were very fortunate to acquire more than 500 pieces from this collection and are pleased to make them available to our buyers.

Tony The Barber features a wonderfully expressive gentleman's face with gray swept-back hair, heavy eyebrows, mustache, rosy cheeks, and hand-painted facial details. His white barber's coat is accented with small yellow buttons and a painted motif of a comb and scissors.

A long slot built into Tony's hair was designed to hold used double-edge razor blades, making this an unusual combination of decorative ceramic art and a practical mid-century razor-blade bank or blade safe.

The underside is marked with the Ceramic Arts Studio Madison, Wisconsin mark and identified as "BARBER HEAD."

DESIGNER HISTORY

Betty Harrington was the principal designer for Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin, during its celebrated 1940s and 1950s period. Beginning her association with the studio in 1942, Harrington created hundreds of imaginative figurines and decorative pieces known for their distinctive personalities, expressive faces and whimsical Mid-Century styling. Her designs remain highly collectible today and are an important part of American ceramic history.

PATTERN & DESIGN

Tony The Barber is an excellent example of Betty Harrington's whimsical approach to ceramic design. Rather than creating an ordinary container for discarded razor blades, the blade slot was cleverly integrated into the barber's sculpted gray hair.

His exaggerated facial features, swept hairstyle, mustache, rosy cheeks, and tiny barber tools painted on his coat give Tony the distinctive personality associated with Betty Harrington's Ceramic Arts Studio designs.

This unusual piece combines Ceramic Arts Studio collecting with vintage barber and shaving memorabilia, making Tony The Barber a particularly interesting example of Harrington's mid-century work.
