ITEM DESCRIPTION

This Ceramic Arts Studio Thai & Thai-Thai Salt & Pepper Shaker Set is in Excellent Vintage Condition with No Chips or Cracks. Made in Madison, Wisconsin, this charming Siamese cat set was designed by Ceramic Arts Studio designer Rebus Cohen and dates from 1952 to 1956.

This Ceramic Arts Studio piece comes from an exceptional lifetime collection of well over 1,000 pieces, including figurines, salt-and-pepper shakers, head vases, and other Ceramic Arts Studio designs. Carefully assembled over many years, the collection represents an extraordinary gathering of Ceramic Arts Studio pieces. We were very fortunate to acquire more than 500 pieces from this collection and are pleased to make them available to our buyers.

Thai & Thai-Thai feature two beautifully modeled Siamese cats designed to nest together as a companion salt-and-pepper set. The cats have creamy ivory bodies accented with rich brown points on their faces, ears, paws, and curled tails.

Expressive hand-painted facial details give each cat its own personality, including striking blue eyes on the larger cat. When placed together, the two sculptural pieces form an especially charming resting pair.

The undersides carry the Ceramic Arts Studio Madison, Wisconsin marks and are individually identified as "THAI" and "THAI-THAI."

DESIGNER HISTORY

Rebus Cohen was one of the designers associated with Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin, during the studio's highly collectible 1950s period. Cohen's designs included imaginative figural and novelty pieces that complemented the whimsical character for which Ceramic Arts Studio became known.

PATTERN & DESIGN

Thai & Thai-Thai are a wonderful example of Ceramic Arts Studio's imaginative approach to novelty salt-and-pepper shakers. Rather than two conventional shaker forms, the set was created as sculptural Siamese cats that visually belong together when displayed side by side.

The creamy bodies, shaded brown Siamese points, curled tails, expressive faces, and hand-painted details give the cats tremendous personality. Their intertwined resting poses make the pair equally appealing as decorative figurines.

With their distinctive Siamese cat design and unusual companion form, Thai & Thai-Thai are a particularly charming example of Rebus Cohen's mid-century work for Ceramic Arts Studio.

Thai measures 2 1/8" High x 4 1/8" Long and Thai-Thai is 3 7/8" High x 5" Long. I have provided many pictures to best describe the condition of this Shaker Set.
