DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Vintage Buffalo China heavy restaurantware luncheon/side plate decorated with a striking cobalt-blue classical figural transferware border on a bright white vitrified china body. The 1-inch rim features a continuous Greco-Roman procession scene depicting horse-drawn chariots, mounted riders, and draped figures carrying staffs or spears, arranged in a narrative frieze that wraps fully around the plate. The bold silhouettes and architectural styling are inspired by ancient Greek and Roman relief sculpture and neoclassical decoration, giving the piece a historical, museum-like appearance rather than a typical floral or diner stripe design.

Produced specifically for commercial restaurant and institutional use, this plate has Buffalo’s signature thick, heavy-weight, vitrified construction designed to withstand years of daily service. It feels substantial in the hand and has the bright glaze and durability collectors expect from authentic American restaurantware.

The reverse retains a faint, impressed BUFFALO CHINA USA backstamp. According to Restaurant China Book, Volume 2 by Barbara J. Conroy, this exact impressed mark is illustrated on page 58 and dates to Buffalo China’s 1970s–1980s production period, confirming authentic late 20th century commercial manufacture.

CONDITION

Excellent vintage restaurant ware condition. Some harder-to-notice little surface scratches on the face of the plate that you can sometimes see when the light reflects off of them. No chips, cracks, crazing, or repairs. Backstamp is faint but readable, typical for impressed Buffalo institutional china.
