ITEM DESCRIPTION

This Ceramic Arts Studio Betty Harrington Design Wing-Sang & Lu-Tang Bamboo Vase Pair is in Excellent Vintage Condition with No Chips No Cracks No Crazing. Designed by Betty Harrington for Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin, these distinctive companion pieces date from 1947–1956 and measure approximately 6 3/4" tall.

Wing-Sang and Lu-Tang are depicted in traditional Asian-inspired dress, each standing beside a tall sculpted bamboo-form vase. One figure holds a round decorated object, while the companion holds a long stringed musical instrument. Their robes are finished primarily in soft ivory with green, blue, yellow and black hand-painted accents.

The tall bamboo vases form an integral part of each figurine. They are finished in warm golden tan with darker speckled shading and molded bamboo-joint detailing, creating an attractive contrast with the lighter-colored figures. The open tops allow the pieces to function as small decorative bud vases as well as figurines.

The undersides retain the Ceramic Arts Studio Madison, Wisconsin factory marks.

DESIGNER HISTORY

Betty Harrington was the principal designer for Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin, one of America's best-known producers of decorative ceramic figurines during the 1940s and 1950s. Her designs are recognized for their stylized forms, expressive personalities and distinctive hand-decorated finishes. Today, Ceramic Arts Studio pieces are collected for their imaginative Mid-Century designs and connection to the history of American studio ceramics.

PATTERN & DESIGN

Wing-Sang & Lu-Tang were designed as complementary companion pieces, combining figural decoration with functional bamboo-form vases. Each figure has an individual pose and accessory while sharing the same overall coloration and styling, making the two particularly attractive when displayed together.

The warm golden bamboo columns feature molded joints, subtle speckling and naturalistic shading. Against them, the ivory robes and bright green, blue, yellow and black painted details stand out beautifully.

The combination of figurine and vase makes Wing-Sang & Lu-Tang an unusual Ceramic Arts Studio design, while the coordinated poses, matching bamboo forms and complementary decoration clearly establish them as a companion pair.

Wing-Sang measures 6 3/4" High x 3 1/4" Wide base, and Lu-Tang is 6 5/8" High x 3 1/8" Wide base. I have provided many pictures to best describe the condition of this Figurine Set.
