ITEM DESCRIPTION

This Ceramic Arts Studio Betty Harrington Mother & Baby Monkey Salt & Pepper Shaker Set is in Excellent Vintage Condition with No Chips No Cracks No Crazing. Designed by Betty Harrington for Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin, this charming set dates to 1951 and measures approximately 4" tall.

This Ceramic Arts Studio piece comes from an exceptional lifetime collection of well over 1,000 pieces, including figurines, salt & pepper shakers, head vases, and other Ceramic Arts Studio designs. Carefully assembled over many years, the collection represents an extraordinary gathering of Ceramic Arts Studio pieces. We were very fortunate to acquire more than 500 pieces from this collection and are pleased to make them available to our buyers.

This delightful design depicts a mother monkey seated upright while holding her baby closely against her body. The two individual shakers fit together to create a single whimsical composition, with the baby nestled securely in the mother's arms.

Both monkeys are beautifully modeled with expressive faces and wonderful sculpted details. The warm gray-brown glaze is accented with darker brown and black detailing around the faces, ears, hands, feet and tails, emphasizing the playful character of the design.

DESIGNER HISTORY

Betty Harrington was the principal designer for Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin, during its celebrated 1940s and 1950s period. Beginning her association with the studio in 1942, Harrington created hundreds of imaginative figurines and decorative pieces known for their distinctive personalities, expressive faces and whimsical Mid-Century styling. Her designs remain highly collectible today and are an important part of American ceramic history.

PATTERN & DESIGN

Mother & Baby Monkey is a wonderful example of Betty Harrington's whimsical novelty salt & pepper shaker designs for Ceramic Arts Studio. Rather than simply standing side by side, the two separate pieces interact to create one complete sculptural composition.

The larger mother monkey forms the main figure, while the smaller baby fits into her arms and rests against her body. Their expressive faces, exaggerated features, curled tails and wonderfully modeled hands and feet give the pair tremendous personality.

Standing approximately 4" tall when displayed together, this charming Mother & Baby Monkey set is an especially appealing example of Betty Harrington's imaginative Ceramic Arts Studio animal designs.

These measure approximately 4" High x 2" Wide base. I have provided many pictures to best describe the condition of this Shaker Set.
