DESIGNER HISTORY
Betty Harrington was the principal designer for Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin, during its celebrated 1940s and 1950s period. Beginning her association with the studio in 1942, Harrington created hundreds of imaginative figurines and decorative pieces known for their distinctive personalities, expressive faces and whimsical Mid-Century styling. Her designs remain highly collectible today and are an important part of American ceramic history.
PATTERN & DESIGN
Calico Cat & Gingham Dog are wonderful examples of Betty Harrington's playful approach to Ceramic Arts Studio novelty designs. Rather than creating two identical shaker forms, Harrington paired two different animals and tied them together through their coordinating colors and imaginative patterned decoration.
The Calico Cat's blue spotted pattern contrasts beautifully with the Gingham Dog's blue checked design, while yellow bodies, colorful bows, and pink accents visually unite the pair. Their oversized eyes, expressive faces, and exaggerated features give them the whimsical personality associated with Harrington's work.
Standing approximately 2 3/4" high and presented together as a matching salt-and-pepper set, Calico Cat & Gingham Dog are a colorful and charming example of Betty Harrington's mid-century Ceramic Arts Studio designs.
These measure approximately 2 3/4" High x 1 3/4" Wide base. I have provided many pictures to best describe the condition of this Shaker Set.
