ITEM DESCRIPTION

This vintage Lamar of California Old Woman Under the Hill Nursery Rhyme Figural Planter is in Very Good Vintage Condition with No Chips No Cracks. NOTE: There is light crazing consistent with age. Made by Lamar of California, this charming ceramic planter dates from the 1940s and measures approximately 5" tall.

The planter depicts a cheerful old woman with rosy cheeks, a smiling face and a large cream-colored bonnet. She wears a deep green blouse with a cream apron and is modeled with her hands folded across the front.

A large open planter compartment is incorporated into the back of the figure, making the piece both a decorative nursery-rhyme character and a functional small planter.

The underside is marked with the verse "There was an old Lady / lived under a hill" and "Lamar of California."

PATTERN & DESIGN

This whimsical planter was inspired by the traditional nursery rhyme beginning, "There was an old woman who lived under a hill."

The old woman is modeled with an exaggerated, friendly expression featuring rosy cheeks, painted eyelashes and a smiling face. Her oversized bonnet, green blouse and cream apron give the figure a charming storybook appearance.

The planter opening is cleverly incorporated into the back of the figure and is largely hidden when displayed from the front.

The nursery-rhyme theme, hand-painted details, California pottery origin and unusual figural form make this an appealing example of vintage 1940s California ceramic ware.

This measures 5" High x 2 1/4" Wide base. I have provided many pictures to best describe the condition of this Figurine.
